Archive for October, 2008Well Mr Baker has been at it again and created a new website for R5 to use!!! I have started a Wiki. You may ask what is a Wiki? Well a Wiki is a page or collection of Webpages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to be able to contribute or change it. In plain English it’s a website where R5 can add and change things. For example a Wiki allows anyone with a password to add Photos, Vokis, Pets etc… Your next question might be ‘How is a Wiki different to a Blog?’ Well with the Blog Mr Baker controls pretty much everything and children and visitors can only add comments. With a Wiki members can add anything they want. Wiki’s are not new and have been around for years. Classrooms all over the world have been using them to enhance learning and share work. Who knows what the Wiki will turn into? Hopefully a place where children and parents can share and continue learning outside the classroom. To access our class Wiki all you need to do is click on this link http://room5atwork.pbwiki.com/ or click on the link under Newbury School in the sidebar. All students have a user name and password which enables them to login and make changes. Anyone without a password can access the Wiki but not make changes. Isn’t R5 lucky? We now have a Blog, Podcast site and a Wiki. Learning has never been so much fun!!!!!!!!
Hey Team, Blog Homework this week is carrying on from what we have been learning in Maths (measurement) and Theme (crime). Foot to Height When a forensic scientist has the length of a foot they can estimate the height of the person. A person’s foot is about 15% of their height. So the foot length x 100 / 15 = the approximate height of the person. (100/15 = 6.666666) Your Blog homework this week requires you to do this exercise with an adult in your family. Record their foot length, times it by 6.666666 and then measure their real height and see whether it matches. Send me a comment with all the details. Lets get measuring Team, I look forward to your answers. Hey, R5 has a new site called Live on Five. It is a site where we can record voice (Podcast) for others to listen to. You can get to it by 3 different ways: 1) - click on the link Room 5’s Podcast in the sidebar below right 2) - click on this link http://room5podcast.podomatic.com/ 3) - Type the above link into your computer and press enter.Today we recorded Emma’s poem, Michael’s speech and Eliza and Kelsi’s song. Eventually I want to turn it into R5’s own Radio Station (Just have to figure out how and buy some new recording gear). Stay tuned it’s going to be awesome!!!!
Hi everyone, today we were lucky enough to have a visit from Mr Paul Murray, a Crown Prosecutor. It was so interesting learning about his job and how the New Zealand legal system works. Hopefully one day someone from Room 5 will go on to become one. I think being a Crown Prosecutor would be a challenging and rewarding job. Here are the results from the Newbury Spelling Bee. 1st - Daniel Y8 2nd - Jaimee Y6 3rd - Eliza Y5 A special mention goes out to Joshua Watson who got 4th and is only a Year 4. Well done everyone. Since it’s Lamb and Calf day on Tuesday I thought Blog Homework for this week should be about pets. All I want you to do is send in a comment telling me about the pets you have at home. Make sure you describe and tell us all about them. I look forward to reading your comments. (Below are some of Room 5’s pets) Next week we are going to make some Glogs in class. Here is an example I made about the Hillary Photo Exhibition. All you need to do is click on the link below and it will take you to it. Hey everyone, the Hillary team is holding a Photo Exhibition on Tuesday at Lamb and Calf Day. Photos have been printed out in colour on photographic paper and can be purchased for $3 half page and $5 full page. The Exhibition is mainly made up of children’s ACE Homework Projects but Mrs Cunningham and myself have also added in some photos from throughout the year. The children have done a great job, so please come along and support the Hillary team and this cool fundraiser. Awesome, it’s back to school tomorrow and it’s straight back into homework. Week one Blog Homework is as follows: 1) Write a question through a comment on the ‘Problem Solving’ page. It can be any question as long as you know the answer. If you want you can also answer other people’s questions. 2) On the ‘Big OE’ Page pick a country from the Europe map and write through a comment its capital city. Check other people’s answers to make sure you don’t write down a capital city that has already been done. I have written down an example on both pages to show you what to do. Lets get commenting everyone, I look forward to reading your questions and answers. We will also have normal Worksheet Homework of Reading, Sentence writing and Spelling. Plus on top of that we have the Big OE Project which I will explain tomorrow. See you all tomorrow!!! Hey team, I have been thinking about our class reward system for this term and are not sure what to use. What I have decided to do is let you vote in the Poll below and the winning one will be the reward system we use for Term 4. So if you want to have your say get voting!!!
I have another site that monitors our Blog and records Statistics. So far we have had visitors from all seven continents and I frequently get e-mails from overseas countries asking for Blogging advice. So thanks everyone for checking out our Blog and supporting the Blog throughout the year. Who knows what the next 8 months will bring? Anyway, thanks again and keep on Blogging everyone!!!!!!
I hope everyone is working on their Speeches as our class Speech competition is on Tuesday, week 1. The Hillary Speech competition is on Wednesday, week 1. Everyone is expected to do a speech. I have just marked everyone’s ACE Project and I was really impressed with your work. Everyone is going to chose 1 photo to sell at the Lamb and Calf day exhibition. I am also going to pick some of my favourite photos from throughout the year and put them up for sale. All proceeds will go towards camp. 98 days until our baby is due and 50 more hits until 10,000 visitors to the Blog! I have also added a new page to the Blog called ‘Problem Solving’. I have put up some problems to solve so check it out.
